Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian says AI is ‘here to stay’

Reddit (RDDT) co-founder Alexis Ohanian is bullish on AI and its long-term value, even as investors worry the tech has driven a stock market bubble that could be on the verge of bursting.

“I think everyone is realizing this technology is here to stay,” said Ohanian, who is also founder and general partner at the venture firm Seven Seven Six, in an interview during Yahoo Finance’s Invest event. “It is real.”

Tech stocks sank across the board Thursday as investors fled riskier bets amid uncertainty over the Federal Reserve’s path to interest rate cuts. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) led declines among the major gauges, losing 2.3% during the trading session, and the AI-fueled “Magnificent Seven” stocks sank a cumulative 2.7%, per Bloomberg data. AI chip giant Nvidia (NVDA) was one of the harder-hit equities, shedding 3.6%.

Some investors are worried that AI will not generate enough returns to justify Big Tech’s hundreds of billions of dollars spent on the technology.

“I don’t spend a lot of time dabbling in the public markets, so I can’t speak to those valuations, but the bigger trend is very real, the innovation, the efficiencies that we’re seeing,” Ohanian added. He gave improvements in writing code, which has changed how apps are created, as an example.

Asked about Thursday’s stock market sell-off, Ohanian said, “I’m still long-term very bullish on the overall technology trends.”

A self-described “tech optimist,” Ohanian also said he thinks AI will create more jobs than it destroys. Goldman Sachs estimates AI could eventually displace 6% to 7% of the US workforce if it is widely adopted.

“With every technological revolution, there’s always new careers, new things that come up that you or I can’t necessarily think of,” he told Yahoo Finance’s Brian Sozzi.

He said, for instance, that becoming a content creator such as MrBeast was unheard of two decades ago. “Now it’s probably one of the most common professions that a young kid, at least in America, wants to be when they grow up,” he said.

He added, “I feel like it’ll be a net positive. That doesn’t mean it won’t be a bumpy road.”
